Here’s a pretty wild reveal from CRKT, following a week after the massive drop of their main new for 2025 line. This is the Provoke X, with which we see Joe Caswell taking his famous Kinematic concept and making a sheathless, transforming axe.

Way, way back in the paleozoic era of KnifeNews, we spoke to Caswell about the future of his Morphing Karambit custom, which eventually transformed into the CRKT Provoke. At that time, he alluded to the possibility of bringing the concept into other tool genres, and now we see that vision coming to production fruition. So, what we have here is a folding utility axe that closes in such a way that it can be carried in the pocket, like a folding knife.

With a flick of the wrist, the Provoke X deploys and locks – and that’s when a second piece of CRKT-produced technology comes into play. Not only is the Provoke X a brand new Kinematic model, it is also equipped with a Deadbolt pivot lock, designed by Flavio Ikoma, to secure both the axe head and the reverse spike in place. With a main cutting of 1.86 inches, the Provoke X seems destined to find its way into the pockets and packs of campers, hikers, and other outdoorsmen.

In its closed state, the Provoke X measures 8.69 inches long, so it’s a fair bit larger than the average closed folding knife – which is to be expected. The pocket clip is loop-over, but not deep carry, because it is designed to leave the finger ring on the back end exposed – this ring, of course, is another detail carried over from the original Provoke karambit. The Provoke X’s head is made from D2 steel and, in total, it weighs 13.2 oz.

The Provoke X is slated for release on April 2nd of this year, but of course, CRKT has the Provoke X with them in Vegas right now, at SHOT Show, which goes on all week. Stay tuned to KnifeNews for more coverage of the big event!
