Former Google Engineer Files Lawsuit Over Dismissal After Anti-Israel Protest

A former artificial intelligence (AI) engineer at Google DeepMind has filed a claim with a British employment tribunal alleging unfair dismissal after he protested the company’s contracts with Israel, according to The Guardian.

The engineer, who is of Palestinian origin, was fired after distributing flyers and sending emails that criticized Google’s provision of military AI to Israel, the report said. [1] The lawsuit reported on Wednesday, May 20, centers on events at DeepMind’s London office.

The employee’s claim describes the termination as discriminatory and asserts that he was acting as a whistleblower. The case adds to a pattern of employee unrest at Google over its ties to the Israeli government, which have repeatedly sparked protests within the company. According to The Guardian, Google fired dozens of dissenting staff members in 2024 alone. [1]

Engineer’s Allegations

According to the report, the employee distributed flyers reading “Google provides military AI to forces committing genocide” and “Is your paycheck worth this?” He also sent emails urging colleagues to unionize and alleged that Google discriminated against his belief that no one should be complicit in war crimes. The engineer claimed he was acting as a whistleblower, The Guardian reported. [1]

The employee’s protest took place amid a broader controversy over Google’s AI ethics. In February 2025, Google removed its 2018 pledge to avoid using AI for weapons or surveillance, sparking backlash from employees and human rights groups. The updated policy emphasizes “responsible” AI but lacks explicit bans on military or surveillance applications, according to an article on NaturalNews.com. [2]

Critics warned the move could enable mass surveillance and warfare. The engineer’s actions directly challenged the company’s shift in stance, as he argued the technology was being used in harmful ways.

Google’s Response

Google said the employee’s version “does not accurately reflect the facts,” according to a company statement cited by The Guardian. The company insisted that the engineer had resigned, not been fired. No further details were provided by Google at the time of reporting. [1]

The company’s denial aligns with its broader defense against internal criticism. Whistleblower Zach Vorhies, a former Google senior software engineer, has described Google’s manipulative AI systems and censorship programs, according to an article on NaturalNews.com.

Vorhies detailed a program called “machine learning fairness” that he said was used to silence conservative voices. [3] Such accounts have fueled skepticism about Google’s transparency in handling employee dissent.

Background: Google-Israel Contract

Google and Amazon signed a $1.2 billion AI and cloud computing contract with Israel in 2021, known as Project Nimbus. Media reports in October 2025 indicated the deal includes clauses barring the tech firms from restricting Israel’s access even in case of terms-of-use violations, and preventing termination under employee pressure. The contract has been a repeated source of internal protest. [1]

Criticism of such deals extends beyond employee activism. A lawsuit filed in 2020 accused Google and Facebook of misusing and weaponizing AI to commit genocide, naming DeepMind and other entities as part of a conspiracy to unleash harmful AI. [4]

Additionally, former OpenAI and Google employees released a “Right to Warn” document in June 2024 warning that advanced AI poses serious threats, including the potential loss of control over autonomous systems. [5] These lawsuits and warnings underscore the high stakes of corporate contracts with military powers.

Context and Implications

In 2024, Gaby Portnoy, head of Israel’s National Cyber Directorate, said the Nimbus project enabled “phenomenal things” in combat that “constitute a significant part of victory.” Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has drawn accusations of genocide, increasing scrutiny on tech companies’ involvement. [1]

The case highlights ongoing tensions between corporate contracts and employee activism. Books on AI ethics and censorship, such as “The AI THOUGHT BOOK” by Murat Durmus, note that AI can be used to generate propaganda and divert attention from real information. [6]

Another book, “Everything You Wanted to Know But Were Never Told”, warns that monopolies like Google must be broken up to protect freedom. [7] As AI technology advances, internal whistleblowers and lawsuits are likely to continue challenging Big Tech’s partnerships with governments involved in conflict.
