ESPN ripped by fans for horrific ‘College GameDay’ decision: ‘Ruined the show!’

It’s back. We’re BACK!

The first week of college football is here, boys and girls. We’ve waited eight months for this day. A full slate of actual college football.

With all due respect to Week Zero, this is the official kickoff to the college football season. Every single team will be on the field today. We’ve got games from noon till midnight. The fans, the pageantry, the bands … it’s all back. Finally.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S FIRST FULL SATURDAY IS HERE AND IT’S A CELEBRATION OF AMERICA AT ITS BEST

Of course, ESPN’s “premiere pregame show,” College GameDay, is also back. That’s a big deal for college football fans. We grew up on this show. It was a Saturday morning staple during our childhoods, and now it’s a staple during our kids’ childhoods.

Sure, characters have changed (Lee Corso’s final show was last year), but the vibe is still the same. Nothing says “fall” quite like College GameDay blaring in the living room at 9 a.m. on a crisp Saturday morning.

HOT TAKE ALERT: ESPN GETTING RID OF ‘BOTTOMLINE’ SCORE TICKER IS A TRAVESTY, NOT A REASON TO CELEBRATE

Now, with all that being said … ESPN and GameDay screwed the pooch this morning by choosing to have country singer Lainey Wilson perform the show’s iconic theme song — “Coming to your City” — live from Baton Rouge.

It was horrific:

Fans fume at ESPN for awful GameDay decision

Lordy. Just awful. This has nothing to do with Wilson, by the way. I like Lainey Wilson. I’m glad ESPN at least had a country singer perform it (although it should always be Big & Rich).

But this just didn’t work. The sound was off. The mic was low. You could barely understand anything Lainey was saying.

Of course, folks accused her of lip-syncing the whole thing. It was a disaster. Nothing about it worked.

Let’s dive into some of the comments!

Indiana dance team members pose with the ESPN College GameDay bus.

  • That was….. kinda rough to watch 👀
  • Absolutely awful — fire anyone and everyone associated with this decision to kick off the season. How can you go away from the Original?
  • Why. Why ruin the beginning of the show. Should have just let the band play.
  • Seriously awful. We wait all year to hear the first open, and this is what we get? What a letdown.
  • Ruined the show the moment it started with her “performance”.
  • That opening stunk, what was wrong with the traditional start of the show? Whoever thought up that change needs a long time out.
  • That was awful. Delete the post. Awful lip synch.

I could go on and on. The internet is in lockstep on this one. No hung jury. No mistrial. No further deliberation. Everyone is on the same page.

Fan gives thumbs down during ESPN's College GameDay at Penn State.

This was a horrible decision by ESPN. Fair is fair, and I have to be fair here. It stunk. We waited eight months … for that?

Disgusting behavior.

Clean it up.
