Whatever you do, don’t wear this particular Epaulette on your shoulders – it’s not a piece of military formal wear, but a new piece inbound from We Knife Co. This one comes from returning design collaborator Mike Gavac.
Gavac’s work, both with production companies and his own custom pieces (which sometimes overlap, with custom models getting translated into production ones), very often have something a little…saurian about them. They have snouts and humped backs and sometimes, as is the case with the Epaulette, they even have scales. Yet they are always still utilitarian underneath the fancy trim, which goes some way to explaining Gavac’s long and fruitful career in the knife scene.
The Epaulette’s blade is a beaky reverse tanto, with a whole lot of belly – in fact, all 3.45 inches of the edge is belly, so the Epaulette will be a particularly good choice for slicing and dicing. The tanto element ensures good piercing capability too, and a minimalist swedge gives a bit of dynamism to the profile and adds a little muscle to the tip. Nothing crazy going on with the steel: we’ve got Bohler M390 again, still the favored super steel at We Knife Co. after years of proven service.
The Epaulette’s arching handle profile is built from a series of shallow, elongated on the spine side, and two inward curves on the bottom – one large to accommodate most of the fingers, one smaller to locate the index finger up underneath the guard. Different colors and finishes on tap too, of course, but a recurring theme is the scale-like diamond pattern on both titanium slabs. You can probably guess given the material here, but the Epaulette is a frame lock.
Expect to see this new Gavko model by the end of the month.
