UPDATES: Mysterious Disease Outbreak In Congo

Another mysterious disease outbreak has occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo. So far, the illness has resulted in at least 60 deaths, out of the approximately 1,000 cases, health officials say.

More Than 50 People Have Died From An “Unknown Disease” In Congo

More than 1,000 cases have been reported so far across the DR Congo’s Equateur province and 141 cases of the disease have been reported in Basankusu’s health zone. A separate outbreak in early February consisted of 158 cases and 58 deaths. In January, Bolamba village reported 12 cases and eight deaths.

So far, health officials have ruled out Ebola and Marburg disease and further testing is being done to confirm or deny meningitis and a potential toxic contamination.

It follows a similar event in September 2024, referred to as “Disease X” before the World Health Organization (WHO) identified it as a cocktail of several known acute respiratory illnesses complicated by malaria and malnutrition.

These new outbreaks could have similar origins, but it will likely take time to determine exactly what the cause is.

WHO emergencies director Mike Ryan, along with local health authorities, believe this is nothing more than a poisoning event.  “It would appear that we have some kind of poisoning event,” Ryan told reporters.

The WHO’s latest memo on the outbreak claimed that the symptoms are broad and include fever, headaches, chills, sweating, stiffness in the neck, muscular aches, joint and body pain, coughing, vomiting, and diarrhea. Because the symptoms are so broad and all-encompassing, this disease could be any number of ailments already known to medical science.

Malaria has been found in one in two cases of this disease, which means this could be a combination of already discovered viruses. This is allegedly essential information for health authorities, but further sampling and analysis by WHO officials in conjunction with local teams will help narrow the search for a cause.

“Tests are never 100% accurate, and it is likely that with increased testing, we will have a confirmed pathogen in some of those samples,” said Michael Head, an epidemiologist at the University of Southampton, UK.

WHO Says Disease X Is A Matter Of “When,” Not “If”

This outbreak does not amount to much just yet, as it is contained to the DRC. Should it spread further and remain mysterious, we could see another pandemic rise around the world.
