TOPS Ephyra Finds Function in Funky Form

Even as things ramp up for BLADE this weekend, TOPS managed to drop a new model ahead of the summer’s signature knife event. The Ephyra blends multiple different martial blade concepts into something that TOPS says can even function outside of that particular role.

There’s a lot to take in when passing your eyes over the Ephyra. Most people, we reckon, will fixate first on the blade. It’s not big, with a blade measuring just 2.88 inches, but this is a profile with presence. At heart you could call it a tanto, but one where the secondary edge is significantly larger than the primary one – and with a massive upsweep along that secondary edge portion, almost in the manner of a trailing point.

The Ephyra locks into the hand but keeps the blade out front

The first and most obvious application for such a blade, of course, is a tactical/self-defense one. The sweep of the blade puts notable distance between the user’s fingers and the edge, keeping them safe during slash cuts. This same negative blade angle makes the Ephyra a surprisingly capable little food prepper, especially outdoors where it can further flex its capabilities in bushcraft/camp chore roles.

A humpbacked handle is what we have on the Ephyra. It’s pretty narrow, but a belly swell in the middle of its length – and the usual TOPS thick G-10 scales – give the little knife a full-sized ergonomic arrangement. It might go without saying, but this is also a notably lightweight piece, weighing 4.2 oz. total, with the Kydex sheath included.

The Ephyra is available now. It will probably be on TOPS table in Atlanta – alongside a whole mess of other new stuff.
