Okay, now this is pretty cool: the August Buck of the Month has just landed and it, uh, marks the return of none other than the Buck 0830 Marksman. This model is an impressive and still-unique folder design collaboration with Hawk Hawk Knife Designs.

Hawk Knife Designs probably needs no introduction, but if you’re new around these parts here’s a quick primer: it’s a custom, mid-tech, and small batch production knife shop founded in Idaho by Grant and Gavin Hawk, a father-son team dedicated to pushing the boundaries of knife design. The Hawks have turned out a slew of unique pieces over the years, including the Chris Reeve Knives Ti-Lock, the Dead Lock OTF, and of course the Marksman itself. Sadly, Grant Hawk passed away in 2023 but Hawk Knife Designs continues to carry forward his drive for innovation and excellence to this day.

The G-10 scales are an interesting change from aluminum

Upon release in 2014, the Marksman was notable within the Hawk oeuvre for being, at the time, the most accessible Hawk piece ever released – and at the time was also a rare foray into modern folder concepts for Buck itself. It has been discontinued for some time, and the last time it resurfaced was in 2021, as the Buck of the Month release for May of that year. That version packed a blade made from D2 steel and white aluminum handle scales.

What’s going on material-wise with the August 2025 Marksman? Well, first of all, the blade steel is 154CM – the same stuff used on the original standard Marksman model back in the day. The scales are pretty striking, made from a red, white, and black marbled G-10. The S.L.S., or Safety Lock System, the signature Marskman feature, is of course present here: a metal backstrap mechanism with a keyhole at the head into which the flipper tab fits when closed, and a blade tang notch when open.

It’s been four years since the Marksman has been available on the primary market, so if you’re interested in this piece of knife history, it’s probably wise to act sooner rather than later.
