Terrain 365 is making knife history with their latest release. We’ve had knives named after all sorts of animals, but their newest piece is the first production blade (to our knowledge) named after the strange and beautiful narwhal.

This Narwhal, the knife, is not strange-looking at all, but sleek, almost classical in appearance. “I wanted to design a full-sized folder that was inspired by the simplicity and ergonomic balance of a capsule shape,” writes Patrick Ma, Terrain 365’s co-founder and Creative Director. To make the blade part of that vision, Ma chose to draw it as a symmetrical, medium-width spear point.

The flipper tab on the Narwhal is barely visible when the knife is open

Mid-sized blades have been back in fashion in recent years, and the Narwhal enters the fray with a 3.5-inch cutting edge. That makes it capable for a very wide gamut of roles, from EDC to a lightweight and reliable backup knife on al fresco treks. It won’t take up a lot of space in the pack or pocket, either, thanks to the very low profile flipper tab. “In keeping with the streamlined design direction, I used a low-profile flipper tab that could easily flip open the blade with your thumb or index finger,” Ma continues.

Ma says that the name “Narwhal” actually came after the design itself was done, but the knife would make an excellent nautical companion as well, given that it is completely rustproof. The handle and its hardware are made from titanium, and the blade is produced in Terravantium, the proprietary rustproof alloy that Terrain 365 uses in many – but not all! – of its knives.

The Narwhal is available now.
