SOKN Fixed Blade Sequel Out for the End of Summer

The Kyle Lamb-designed Civivi SOKN must’ve been a hit, because it’s already getting a larger sequel called the MDRN. The MDRN is not just a simple upscale, as while it retains the unique tactical grip of the SOKN, its blade profile is noticeably different.

The MDRN doesn’t quite double the blade length of the SOKN, but it comes pretty close (as a side note, the “MD” in its name makes us think of the word “medium;” does that mean an even larger one is on the way?). The smaller predecessor measured a small-but-mighty 2.8 inches, while the MDRN runs all the way out to 4.12 inches. It’s not an enormous cutting implement, but it is now large enough to be called a full-size fixed blade, with a wider suite of applications than baby brother.

The sheath comes with double buckles

While the SOKN earned a dual EDC fixed blade and self-defense designation, the MDRN could better be described as an outdoors/tactical piece, with the inherent hard use characteristics of fixed blade construction coming to the fore on this larger piece. The narrow drop point blade shape, very different in profile when compared against the SOKN, looks very woodsy, almost bushcrafter-y. The Nitro-V steel makes it an excellent choice in any outdoor role you choose for it.

Then there is the handle, which is much closer to Lamb’s previous piece, with an undulating profile and foot-like pommel that facilitates some of the more unconventional knife grips while still being functional in the standard hammer grip. The scales are G-10, available in brown or black, and comes with a black Kydex sheath. It weighs 3.65 oz. The MDRN is shipping in a couple of weeks.
