Editor’s note: This is a developing story.

Fort Stewart in Georgia was put under a base-wide lockdown Wednesday morning after reports of an active shooter on site, according to service officials.

In a social media post, base officials confirmed an active shooter incident in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area. The installation was locked down shortly after 11 a.m.

“We are currently assessing the situation but we can confirm an active shooter,” Lt. Col. Angel Tomko said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Officials also confirmed that casualties have been reported, but did not provide any other details.

Fort Stewart is located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, Georgia, and is home to the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division. Roughly 10,000 troops and family members live on the installation. It is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River.

A post on Fort Stewart’s Facebook page told all personnel in the locked down area to “stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors.”
