Back in the winter of 2023, we covered the Zero, a utility knife that stood out in the sea of Kickstarter knife projects thanks to its sleek, screw-free design. The Zero came from a company that was then called Rivery CNC, which has rebranded as Rivery Manufacturing and is setting up for big things.

“At a glance, the Zero doesn’t look like a knife at all, let along a utility knife; it looks more like a worry stone or other EDC-related accessory,”so we wrote in 2023 when we first laid eyes on the design. In fact, the worry stone comparison is more apt than we knew, because the tactile element of the Zero is a major, intended part of its design. The company sometimes describes the Zero as a “Haptic OTF utility knife,” which is to say something that it’s just as fun to fire in and out as it is to use.

The Zero obviously resonated, because the Kickstarter project surpassed its funding ask by leaps and bounds. Inspired by this success, Sayers decided to take Rivery into a more expansive direction in 2024 – hence the name change. The enlarged ambition can be seen within the Zero line itself, which now contains more than ten different configurations: different colors, finishes, and textures really play up the aesthetic/collector’s interest side of this utility knife.

That being said, when it comes time to use the Zero, it functions in a way not dissimilar to the utility knives of yore: sliding the scale forward deploys the disposable razor blade; pushing backwards on it retracts the blade. Obviously, no sharpening is necessary here; when the blade is dull, users can simply open their Zero – again, with no need for any other tools – and pop in a new razor.

The Zero has been unavailable directly from Rivery, but, for the first time, a batch of Zeros will be stocked at KnivesShipFree tomorrow morning. The shop will be offering 11 different variations, including some of the limited edition anodizations made in collaboration with CadLabCNC.
