French designer Raphael Durand has contributed a new model to the Boker Magnum lineup. The Echidna hits shelves with materials chosen for affordability, but packs a look that can be traced directly back to Durand’s higher-end production and custom pieces.

Durand’s typical style occupies that space beyond “modern” or “traditional.” His works with some particular fusion of old and new concepts that make all of his knives feel timeless, tools that would make as much sense to a user from 100 years ago, as a modern-day forum-dwelling knife enthusiast. His designs also showcase an interest visual balance, where both the blade and handle are halves of the visual hole, each drawn as exaggerated, playfully bold renditions of the classic shapes.

The Echidna is opened with two hands, but there is no nail nick

The Echidna lands on the larger side, with a blade length of 3.62 inches. Durand concocted a swaggering clip point for this one, whose fiery demeanor is underlined by the big harpoon swedge. Small and mid-sized chores seem to be this one’s bailiwick, and the 440B steel – seemingly the line-standard stuff in the Magnum line – will prove reliable and easy to maintain, even if it can’t turn in the kind of performance metrics that newer or more complex recipes do.

In another very Durand touch, the Echidna is opened with two hands, but there is no nail nick or other typical indentation here; users are expected to simply pinch the blade and pull to bring this one into the open position. Once it’s there, the blade is secured by a back lock with its disengagment point set very low on the handle. The scales are a combination of nylon and TPE, and the clipless Echidna comes with a nylon sheath for belt carry. It weighs just over 4 oz.

The Echidna is available Echidnow.
