Jack Wolf Knives just let loose their latest piece last week. The Primo Jack sports materials befitting its name and grows the ranks of locking designs in the Jack Wolf catalog.
Jack Wolf is in the midst of a tempestuous love affair with the barlow – as are many enthusiasts. They’ve riffed on the form multiple times, including on the Little Bro and Big Bro Jack, two companion pieces and obvious near-relations to the brand new Primo Jack. The heritage is clear to see, and goes back to the Platonic forms of the barlow pattern, one of the oldest and most venerated single blade jack knife patterns ever devised.
The Primo Jack is a fairly sizeable specimen, both for barlows and for a Jack Wolf release, with a 3.26-inch blade. The shape in use here is a clip point, a classic choice for a single blade barlow user – and, combined with S90V powder metallurgy steel, the Primo Jack can be used for a long time before it needs to visit the stones. There is a fuller-style nail mark on the blade but, it’s buried quite deep into the handle and the front flipper tab will clearly be the primary opening method for most people.
One of the signature characteristics of any Jack Wolf release is the reimagining of classic knife lines within a palette of modern materials. The Primo Jack doesn’t buck this trend, with an elongated bolster made from titanium, and the frame lock built from that same material. But some of the scale options exude a traditional air, including a micarta model and another made with rosewood. All variations of the Primo Jack are nice and light, coming in right under 3 oz. across the board.
