Buck is closing out the year with one final fixed blade Buck of the Month. This time, the 212 Fixed Ranger has been brought back for a limited time, in an exclusive one-off configuration.

The name gives it away: the 212 is a fixed blade version of the 112 Ranger, the smaller companion piece to the almighty Buck 110 Folding Hunter – which itself has a fixed blade version these days. The Ranger originated in a demand for a smaller version of the 110, in response to restrictions some members of the Navy were confronted with after 110s were reportedly used in fights between Navymen.

The 212 and its distressed leather sheath.

The 101, as the 110’s folding fixed blade sibling is called, stuck pretty decisively to the lines of the original, but the 212 takes a more creative approach when it comes to its visual relationship with the folding knife that preceded it. As you would expect with a fixed blade, the 212 is bigger than its folding inspiration. In fact, at 3.65 inches long, it’s nearer to the 110 in length. The blade shape, however, deviates from both famous folders: it’s nearly a trailing point, with a very pronounced clip tip and some mild recurve in the belly region. The steel is S30V, an older but ever-reliable powder metallurgy steel, with a Bos heat treat here that really brings out the best of this relative old-timer.

The grip portion of the handle is made from burgundy Micarta, a handsome, classy choice, capped on both ends by brass elements, a guard and a pommel. The rustic material trinity is completed by the presence of a distressed leather sheath. In total, the 212 weighs 5.8 oz. This build is limited to just 1000 pieces, each one accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. These actually arrived before Christmas and are, as of the time of writing, still available – so if you’re a Buck fan and have some Christmas money burning a hole in your pocket, this could be a way to spend it.
