We Knife Co. brought on superstar maker Jason Knight for a collaboration model called the Essential. The Essential is built with the expected high-end We components and materials, and also shows off Knight’s unmistakable brash and bold style.

If you could boil down Knight’s approach to knifemaking to one single characteristic, it’s tempting to say that he’s all about the blade. That may seem obvious given that the blade is, y’know, pretty much the distinguishing characteristic of a knife, but it goes beyond that with Knight. A Knight blade marries form and function with exaggerated, stylized profiles that, for all of their big statement piece energy, never lose sight of the utility-oriented fundamentals at the heart of all good knife design.

The all black color scheme suits Knight’s design

So it’s good to see that We letting Knight do his thing with the Essential, a flipper-only folding design with a piratical, big-bellied, harpoon-sporting 3.6-inch clip point blade. The profile is one to make cardboard, wood, and errant zip ties shake in their metaphorical boots – and the Essential will be able to chew threw a lot of those things without needing much attention from the stones, thanks to the M390 blade steel utilized across this model line.

The Essential’s handle is less of a scene-stealer than the blade – more of a hand-holder, really. Mildly arched, it also has a loose bracket-ish profile with flared back and front ends, and a swell in the middle to fill the palm. All three models on offer have full titanium scales with the nigh-universal frame lock; one aesthetic option worthy of note here is the “etched pattern” titanium, which has a roadworn, battle-proven look to it.

The Essential is expected to ship by the end of the month.
