Civivi Placoid is a Rugged Workhorse Folder

In our ongoing coverage of Civivi’s ongoing, steady release schedule, we last covered the Hyperpulse, a straightforward, mid-sized EDC flipper. If you were hoping for something a little heftier from the prolific production company, you may want to check out the Placoid, another incoming folder model.

In settling on names for its releases, Civivi has been ransacking the dictionary and pulling out some pleasingly obscure terminology. “Placoid” refers specifically to a particular style of fish scale, shaped somewhat like a tooth; so, in a broader sense, it can also mean anything that is toothlike – and as our brain continues to expand in consideration of this, it occurs to us that many blade shapes have a certain affinity with the shape of a predator’s tooth!

As usual, there is a damascus/wood option for the fancy folks

Which brings us to the Placoid’s blade, a sizeable, toothy hunk of 14C28N blade steel. It’s a wide drop point shape, with subtle,= but effective planing on the blade flat and swedge to give it a bit of sweep and character. What you end up with is something that may be inspired by fish but is actually a horse – a workhorse, that is, something that users can pick up for larger cutting projects, or carry on a regular basis as their EDC.

As befits such a blade, the Placoid’s handle is chunky (but not overly heavy), sturdy, and simple, with a palm swell in the middle of its frame and the butt end and finger guard creating a mild but present bracket shape. One thing of particular note here is that this one is rolling out in two different types of G-10: coarse-grained black or green flavors, as well as the rarely seen “shredded” G-10 in a bold blue color. These are in addition to the usual Civivi wood scale, damascus-blade premium variant. That model is the lightest at 4.34 oz., while all three G-10 Placoids tip the scales at 4.64 oz.

This one is coming soon.
